Suzette Delaloge
Medical oncologist specialising in breast cancer
I came to gustave roussy in 1999 with the aim of advancing the treatment of breast cancer. in the last 20 years at the institute we have pushed back the frontiers of treatment of the condition in all its aspects: one-day diagnosis, precision medicine, immediate scar-free breast reconstruction, etc. thanks to our close association with the research teams, we are able on a daily basis to give our patients access to novel therapy.
In 2004 we were the first to set-up “one-stop” consultations: all of the tests performed in a single day, whereas previously it took at least 3 weeks to reach a diagnosis. At the time this was a daring gamble but this arrangement is now internationally recognised as the model.
At present my research is focused on “4P” medicine: Preventive, Predictive, Personalised and Participatory. I coordinate MyPeBS, a European study involving 85,000 women with the intention of providing breast screening “to-measure”.
Things progress. Not as rapidly as we would sometimes like them to but they are doing so. The advances we have made should not lead to our forgetting the 12,000 deaths from breast cancer every year in France. We should be screening at an earlier stage, curing more women, avoiding relapses and reducing sequelae and side effects. I am immensely grateful to all the women who place their trust in us each day and to Gustave Roussy’s remarkable infrastructure.
