Léonor Benhaim,
Surgeon specialising in robotic surgery
The courage, strength and human generosity of patients and their families never cease to amaze me.
I knew I wanted to work at Gustave Roussy during my internship in 2012. I met an exceptional team here just a few months before leaving for a research year in the US. At the time I was particularly impressed by the balance between finding the best treatment and the human factor. On my return from the US, I had the opportunity to join the surgical team and develop the robot-assisted gastrointestinal surgery unit.
Working in oncology has its challenges. Patients find themselves in a particularly complex situation. We have to constantly update our skills to offer optimum treatment in each situation. The management techniques are also very specific in surgery. I therefore spent time reading, writing and listening to acquire the knowledge needed to work in a cutting edge establishment. This training is ongoing.
Taking all specialties into account, we are now one of the largest robot-assisted surgical centres in France. Gustave Roussy also allows me to continue my own scientific research activities. Patient care is constantly evolving.
Our approach here is based on team work. We have discussions with every member of the medical team to ensure that we are moving forward in the right direction. Team motivation and a spirited approach are also evident in the nursing and paramedical staff, whose commitment has always impressed me.
For me, consultations are the opportunity for dialogue. The relationship with each patient is unique. Every day I meet courageous, exceptional and attentive individuals who encourage me to do my best. It’s not always easy. There are times when we are unsure and unfortunately the best is not always enough. But many patients are cured and I am always impressed by the courage, strength and human generosity of the patients and families I have the privilege of meeting.
