Named Gustave Roussy International Egypt, the opening of a cancer centre in Cairo, Egypt, marks the transformation of the Dar Al-Salam-Hermel Oncology Hospital under a brand licensing agreement with Gustave Roussy International, a subsidiary of Gustave Roussy. The centre will eventually be equipped with 300 beds and will be capable of treating all types of adult cancers. Two new buildings will be constructed to strengthen and complete the existing infrastructure. This ambitious project, carried out in partnership with the Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt and Elevate P.E., aims to establish the centre as a hub of excellence in oncology for Egypt and the wider region.
On 7 April, a joint declaration confirming the commitment to collaboration was signed between the Arab Republic of Egypt and the French Republic in the presence of French President Emmanuel Macron, under the high patronage of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. The declaration was signed by Professor Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Health and Population, and Professor Fabrice Barlesi, CEO of Gustave Roussy and representative of Gustave Roussy International.
The brand licensing agreement between Gustave Roussy International and Elevate P.E. was signed following this event, in the presence of Catherine Vautrin, French Minister for Labour, Health, Solidarity and Families, Éric Lombard, Minister for the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, and Rania Al-Mashat, Egyptian Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation, along with Professor Khaled Abdel Ghaffar.
Following these agreements, Gustave Roussy International Egypt welcomed its first patients on 8 April 2025. The cancer centre aims to become a regional reference by integrating cutting-edge technologies in radiotherapy, genomics, and innovative treatments. It is committed to providing patients with high-quality care, with a particular focus on those from the public sector, who are expected to make up 70% of its beneficiaries.
A structured training programme will enhance the skills of Egyptian healthcare professionals and ensure the lasting dissemination of oncology excellence standards. Doctors from Gustave Roussy will travel to Egypt for training and consultation missions, while their Egyptian counterparts will be hosted in France to attend master classes, particularly in chemotherapy.
