Biography
Dr Ines Vaz Luis
Dr Ines Vaz Luis, a medical oncologist and researcher, is an internationally recognised specialist in cancer survivorship and the assessment of post-treatment quality of life.
At Gustave Roussy, she leads the medical-scientific programme INTERVAL, which focuses on life after cancer, with the aim of better identifying and preventing treatment-related toxicities. She is also Head of the Cancer Survivorship research group within Inserm Unit U981 and Deputy Head of the Interdisciplinary Department for Patient Pathway Organisation (DIOPP).
At the national level, she co-leads the scientific development of research based on the CANTO cohort (CANcer TOxicities), which studies the side effects experienced by women treated for localised breast cancer, in order to identify populations most at risk and to adapt care accordingly. She also leads the development of WeShare, a shared, dynamic, integrated, patient-centred national digital research platform, coordinated by Unicancer, aimed at accelerating the decentralisation of oncology research — particularly in the field of human and social sciences in cancer care.
Dr Vaz Luis completed her medical studies in Portugal before moving to the United States, where she earned a Master’s degree in Clinical Research from the prestigious Harvard Medical School. She remained there for nearly five years, serving as an Assistant Professor at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, affiliated with Harvard University.
Since joining Gustave Roussy in 2016, she has continued her research, focusing on quantifying treatment burden, stratifying cancer-related toxicities, and developing and implementing interventions to mitigate the deterioration of quality of life.
She is the author of over 100 peer-reviewed international publications and has delivered more than 200 presentations at international conferences (Google Scholar H-index: 29). Dr Vaz Luis serves on the executive board of the international network BIG against breast cancer, and sits on scientific committees of both the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
In 2024, she was awarded the International Women Who Conquer Cancer Mentorship Award, presented by ASCO and its foundation, Conquer Cancer.
